I found myself in a coaching session earlier today. Just like every coaching session I talked about myself and my goals. I talked about my accomplishments and my theories on everything from business to how I feel about life. I have become an expert through time at talking but not really saying anything. Hell, I can talk for hours about myself and never really say one thing.
This coaching session was different, there were two coaches at the meeting. This is unusual because a coaching session is usually one on one, or if there were two people it was usually two people being coached. Two coaches didn’t present a problem for me I know how to control a room. I talked and talked it was a 30-minute session and I could do that standing on my head. With only 5 minutes left in the class, one of the two coaches pointed at me and said “It’s great that you strive to help so many people around you, it is also fantastic that you think the world of the guys that work for you, and you want to raise them up. There is just one nagging question. Why?”
I started spinning in my head, I actually thought to myself only 5 minutes left. So I started talking in circles “I want them to be happy. I want them to be role models for their children. I want them to live productive lives.”
“What do you get out of it? he asked.
Time was up…. I was shook….So here’s my answer….
Life is too short, to spend with people that want to tear you down. During my lifetime I have had a lot of people that spent a lot of effort to make me angry, sad, or in some cases, they just wanted to stomp on my dreams. Helping other people to accomplish their dreams makes me happy. The look on a person’s face when they finally start to succeed is my reward.
It makes me feel good and it makes me feel whole. So don’t be afraid of coaching because it might just bring something unexpected out of you.
